About the Course

Course Description: 

This course focuses on common automotive networks including; CAN, LIN and Ethernet. Emphasis is placed on network architecture, measurement and diagnosis. Participants enrolled in this class should have prior knowledge of advanced DMM functions and DSO operation.


Course Topics:

  • Automotive network fundamentals

  • Automotive network architecture and operation; CAN, FDCAN, SWCAN, LIN, FlexRay, and Ethernet

  • Understanding network DTC’s (Diagnostic Trouble Code)

  • Digital Storage Oscilloscope set-up and waveform recording

  • Abnormal waveform detection

  • Automotive network diagnostic approach

  • Automotive network repair techniques


Hands-on Activities: 

  • Reference service information to identify automotive network architecture/topology 

  • Locate and access automotive networks

  • Inspect networks using a scantool

  • Test automotive networks with a digital multimeter (DMM)

  • Testing automotive networks with a digital storage oscilloscope (DSO)

  • Analyze waveforms to determine network malfunctions

  • Diagnose network malfunctions using splice packs
